In Tower Toppler (1987), players control a green alien named Pogo on a mission to destroy eight mysterious towers that are contaminating the water of potential colony planets. To accomplish this, Pogo must scale each tower by navigating a series of ledges, elevators, and hazards wrapped around the tower’s cylindrical structure.
The gameplay unfolds in a pseudo-3D environment where the tower appears to rotate as the character moves left or right, creating an innovative visual effect for the time. Players must dodge or destroy roaming enemies—often simple geometric shapes—and time their jumps carefully to avoid falling. A missed jump or contact with an indestructible enemy can send Pogo tumbling down or into the sea below.
Between towers, bonus stages take place in Pogo’s MK.7 submarine, offering a change of pace with side-scrolling underwater segments for additional points.
Originally developed in the UK as Nebulus, the game was released in North America under the name Tower Toppler by U.S. Gold and Epyx, and later adapted for various systems with region-specific changes. Its clever rotation mechanic and challenging vertical gameplay made it a standout title among late-’80s platformers.
