The New World

1982
The New World (1982) is a turn-based colonization strategy game published by Epyx for the Apple II and TRS-80. Designed for up to three players—either human or computer-controlled—it places players in command of one of three European powers: England, France, or Spain, competing to establish dominance in the Americas starting in the year 1495. Gameplay unfolds in five-year increments as players manage fleets, deploy soldiers, and recruit colonists to build thriving colonies across the New World. Strategic decisions include purchasing ships, managing troop deployments, and launching expeditions to claim land and extract precious resources such as gold. These assets must be safely transported back to Europe to fund further expansion. The game features confrontations with indigenous tribes and rival colonial powers, introducing both moral and tactical dilemmas. Each round concludes with a detailed status report covering income, expenses, military strength, and colonist activity. Randomized events—like storms or revolts—add a layer of unpredictability and challenge. The New World combines historical simulation with resource management and light wargame mechanics. Its blend of geopolitical maneuvering and economic strategy delivers a thoughtful, text-heavy gameplay experience rooted in the age of exploration.
Conquering indigenous peoples to steal their gold and send it back to enrich the crown isn’t something that we want to celebrate or gamify.  We’re going to retire this title.
