In The Movie Monster Game (1986), players take control of a giant creature rampaging through a cityscape, choosing from six monsters—including an officially licensed Godzilla—each with their own animations and destructive flair. The cities under siege include global capitals like New York, London, Moscow, and Tokyo, all rendered with recognizable landmarks to obliterate or rescue depending on the scenario.
A spiritual successor to Crush, Crumble and Chomp!, this title ditches turn-based strategy in favor of real-time arcade movement. Players select from five plot-driven scenarios such as “Rescue the Monster’s Child” or “Eat the City,” with gameplay cleverly framed as a B-movie shown on a drive-in theater screen, complete with faux trailers and snack bar ads.
With its mix of campy presentation, licensed kaiju action, and city-smashing chaos, The Movie Monster Game delivers a playful homage to monster movie tropes while offering more immediate control and accessibility than its predecessor.
We really believe the Rampage video games were based on Epyx’s Crush, Crumble, and Chomp, and of course this title – The Movie Monster Game. It’s a fun genre, and who doesn’t love taking on the role of a monster and devouring a city. We’d love to see a re-release of this classic, and we’re happy to re-license Godzilla again (if the price is reasonable — otherwise we turn that character into a T-Rex named Fred).
