The Games: Summer Edition (1988) marked the final entry in Epyx’s acclaimed Olympic-themed series and brought together new challenges with reimagined classics from Summer Games and Summer Games II. Licensed by the United States Olympic Committee, it includes eight events: Velodrome Sprint Cycling, Hurdles, Pole Vault, Hammer Throw, Uneven Parallel Bars, Rings, Archery, and Springboard Diving.
Up to eight players can compete in team or individual modes, earning points based on medal placements—five for gold, three for silver, and one for bronze. Notably, the game avoids button-mashing mechanics, emphasizing timing and precision instead.
Events range from the strategic, like adjusting for wind in Archery, to the reflex-driven Hurdles and the technically animated gymnastics events. Pole Vault and Diving return with overhauled visuals and smoother animation, while new additions like Rings and Hammer Throw showcase Epyx’s improved character modeling and fluid sprite work. Velodrome Cycling, originally featured in Summer Games II, now incorporates a sprint-based mechanic where only the final lap is timed.
A dynamic opening ceremony, detailed event sequences, and refined controls make this one of the most polished sports packages of its era. The Games: Summer Edition closes out Epyx’s Olympic run with visual flair, accessible gameplay, and enough variety to satisfy both solo players and party competition.
This title is our intellectual property, and we’d love to work on a re-release for the upcoming Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. This was officially licensed by the United States Olympic Committee, which we’re happy to do again for a re-release.
