The Eidolon

1985
The Eidolon (1985) is a surreal first-person adventure from Lucasfilm Games that casts the player as a lone explorer piloting a strange steam-powered contraption through a network of alien caves. Discovered in a forgotten 19th-century laboratory, the Eidolon is both your vessel and your weapon, capable of collecting energy orbs and unleashing powerful fireballs. As you descend through eight increasingly treacherous levels, you’ll encounter bizarre creatures like Greps, Bottlenecks, Rotoflies, and Puffer Birds, each reacting to different types of orb attacks. Blue orbs freeze enemies, green ones transform them, and red orbs can’t be absorbed—adding a layer of tactical decision-making to every encounter. To advance, you must defeat color-coded guardian enemies to collect diamonds, culminating in a boss battle against a dragon at the end of each level. The game’s fractal-based cave system, built on the same technology as Rescue on Fractalus! and Koronis Rift, gives it an immersive pseudo-3D feel rarely seen at the time. With no save system, limited energy, and real-time threats, The Eidolon demands both fast reflexes and strategic thinking. Its unique mix of shooter mechanics, resource management, and exploration helped define early first-person action games.
Epyx released four titles under license from Lucasfilm, including The Eidolon, Koronis Rift, Rescue on Fractalus, and Ballblazer. All of the rights for the Lucasfilm titles are still held by Lucasfilm, which is now part of Disney.  They have licensed some titles out (like Monkey Island), but when we inquired, they weren’t yet ready to relicense any of the Epyx titles.
