Temple of Apshai Trilogy

1985
The 1985 Temple of Apshai Trilogy  brought together three cornerstone titles from the Dunjonquest series—Temple of Apshai, Upper Reaches of Apshai, and Curse of Ra—in a refreshed and accessible format for modern home computers. With enhanced graphics, music, and a streamlined interface, Temple of Apshai Trilogy preserved the original’s blend of stat-driven role-playing and tactical dungeon exploration, while making it more approachable for new audiences. Each of the trilogy’s twelve dungeon levels featured handcrafted layouts and vivid room descriptions, originally read from a manual, now integrated directly into the game on some platforms. Players could choose between character creation or quick-start templates, and navigate deadly traps, monsters, and treasure-filled chambers turn by turn. Later 16-bit versions, developed by Westwood Studios, added mouse-based menus and ported the experience to platforms like the Amiga and Atari ST. Though attempts to convert the game to real-time were rejected, the trilogy marked a significant step in evolving RPG interfaces. Despite its legacy as an early dungeon crawler, Temple of Apshai Trilogy remained notable for its atmospheric world-building and strategic depth, even as the genre advanced.
Considered one of the best implementations of the Temple of Apshai games, this is a title that we’re very interested in reviving.  You can find some playthroughs on YouTube, and the real opportunity is still to integrate all of the manual details in the actual gameplay.  the Dunjonquest mythology is incredibly rich, and could form a strong foundation for a comprehensive revival of all 11 titles in the series.
