Super Cycle

1986
Super Cycle (1986) puts players behind the handlebars of a superbike in a fast-paced, arcade-style race to the finish. Clearly inspired by Sega’s Hang-On, the game features a behind-the-rider perspective with smooth cornering animations as the bike tilts and weaves through traffic. The goal is to beat the clock across a series of increasingly difficult tracks, dodging rival racers while shifting through three gears to reach a top speed of around 120 MPH. There are three selectable difficulty levels, each adjusting the time limit and scoring mechanics. Bonus rounds every two races challenge players to collect tokens for extra points, adding variety to the core racing action. While not an original concept, Super Cycle delivers responsive controls, colorful visuals, and a satisfying sense of speed—especially on the Commodore 64, where it became one of the more polished racing experiences of the era.
This genre has evolved a lot… in fact, you can watch a video of how motorcycle racing games have changed.  Epyx’s Super Cycle appears at about 40 seconds in this video.  Given just how many great motorcycle racing games are out there, and seeing how the genre has changed, we’re not sure if making another motorcycle game is the most productive path, versus reviving some of our more unique titles.  If you disagree, of course reach out and talk to us.
