In Space Station Oblivion (1987), originally Driller from Incentive Software, players take control of a remote excavation probe sent to prevent a planetary catastrophe. The moon Mitral, orbiting the colonized planet Evath, is on the verge of exploding due to pressurized gas pockets beneath its surface. If the explosion occurs, the devastation will destroy both Mitral and Evath. Your mission is to navigate this hostile terrain, disable security systems left behind by the Ketar rebels, and deploy 18 drilling rigs across Mitral’s surface to safely vent the gas.
Presented in immersive first-person 3D using the Freescape engine, the game features full rotation and vertical aiming—an innovative leap for its time. Players traverse 18 interconnected sectors suspended on platforms above the surface, using clues and visual cues to determine where to drill. Falling off a platform strands the probe, though a hovering vehicle found in one region allows for expanded exploration and limited combat.
Gameplay involves careful navigation, environmental puzzle-solving, and occasional shooting. Enemy installations vary: some can be destroyed, while others require logic-based solutions. Players must monitor gas pressure levels, avoid hazards, and work quickly—time is limited.
