One of Epyx’s most iconic titles, Impossible Mission (1984) casts players as a secret agent racing against time to stop the evil Professor Elvin Atombender, who is believed to be compromising national security systems. Armed with only a portable computer and acrobatics, players must infiltrate Atombender’s high-tech stronghold, evading deadly robot sentries while searching rooms for pieces of a secret password.
Gameplay blends platforming, puzzle-solving, and stealth. Each room contains hazards and furniture that can be searched for puzzle pieces or power-ups like robot freezes and platform resets. The game features dynamic enemies: stationary or patrolling robots, some with visual tracking or death rays, and floating electrified orbs. Contact with any of these results in death—and a ten-minute penalty from your six-hour time limit.
Puzzles are randomized each session. Players must assemble 36 password pieces into nine complete codes to unlock Atombender’s control room. Assembling the puzzles requires flipping, rotating, and overlapping pieces in increasingly complex ways.
Praised for its fluid animation (including a signature somersault inspired by athletic diagrams) and groundbreaking digitized speech (“Another visitor. Stay a while… stay forever!”), Impossible Mission is widely considered one of the greatest games of its era, with enduring influence across both platformers and spy-themed adventures.
One of our most beloved titles, this title inspired an entire genre of action-adventure games. There’s a nice
overview at this link and we absolutely, unequivocally want to revive this title and upgrade it for a new generation. We’ve even got a letter from Paramount allowing us to continue to use the name and exactly how it must be presented (hint –> no colons and can’t use the word that starts with an “f” and rhymes with horse). We’ve got a ton of ideas on how to revive this title (and the
sequel), and so if you’re an established game studio who wants to work with one of the most iconic titles in gaming history, please reach out to us.
