Head-On Baseball, released along with Head-On Football in 1988, is a two-player board game that combines classic baseball strategy with the excitement of radio-style audio commentary. Players manage their own teams using a set of batter and pitcher cards. Outcomes are determined by aligning cards with a red decoder window to reveal the result of each at-bat.
Some plays prompt the “XX Tape XX” instruction, signaling players to cue up the included audio cassette. The announcer then delivers a vivid play-by-play broadcast, bringing the moment to life. With over 200 prerecorded calls, no two games feel quite the same.
Each team has 15 batters and 12 pitchers, and gameplay follows standard baseball rules across nine innings. With randomized tape outcomes, strategic decision-making, and nostalgic charm, Head-On Baseball offers a unique and immersive twist on the tabletop sports genre.
Like the similar product Head-On Football, this was a board game with a cassette tape that you’d start and stop to enrich the card-based play action (along with a red decoder card). It’s a nostalgic title, but we don’t think there’s a large enough market for a meaningful revival.
