Trapped by the evil spider Zendocon, In this 1989 Atari Lynx launch title, players must pilot a starfighter through a web of 51 alien-infested universes, each connected by teleportation gates. Originally developed by Epyx as a showcase title for the Atari Lynx, Gates of Zendocon delivers a sprawling side-scrolling shooter experience, with branching level paths and varied enemy threats across each stage.
Unlike traditional arcade shooters like Scramble, Gates of Zendocon adds strategic depth: some enemies, once defeated, become allies and bolster your arsenal, while alien bases allow you to repair shields and weapons—if you land safely. A hidden bonus level rewards exploration and features digitized images of the development team. Though early in the Lynx library, the game’s variety, non-linear progression, and eerie sci-fi atmosphere made it a memorable early standout for the handheld.
Epyx poured their hearts into this title as a way to show off the internally developed Handy, which was eventually sold to Atari who released it as the Lynx. It’s a fun outer space shoot-em-up, and a version was started for Jaguar but never finished. There’s still a hardcore Lynx fanbase for this title, and we’d like to work with a company who wants to revive these titles either for legacy hardware or to make an updated version for modern platforms.
