In Future Knight (1986), players step into the boots of Randolph, a laser-armed hero whose ship—the S.S. Rustbucket—has crash-landed on the alien world of Planet 2749. Inside the wreckage, hostile robots roam the corridors, and Randolph’s mission is clear: blast his way out, defeat the alien menace, and rescue his kidnapped beloved, Princess Amelia.
Gameplay spans twenty side-scrolling, flip-screen levels, transitioning from the maze-like interiors of the damaged cruiser to the dangerous planet surface. Players must dodge traps, fight off mechanical enemies, and navigate increasingly perilous environments. A few playful touches liven up the experience—leave Randolph idle, and he’ll wave, panic, and eventually collapse in frustration if ignored for too long.
Originally released by Gremlin Graphics, Future Knight was later part of Epyx’s budget-friendly Val-U-Line. While its visuals and quirky animations were praised on release, the gameplay received mixed reviews in later years. The Spectrum version includes a hidden level editor accessible via a specific key combo.
