Fore!

1982
Fore! (1982) is a top-down golf simulation published by Automated Simulations for the Apple II, offering solo or multiplayer gameplay for up to seven players. Emphasizing strategic play over arcade-style action, Fore! simulates the experience of a full round of golf across multiple course types, complete with hazards and real-world golfing mechanics. Players select their club, shot direction (from a full 360 degrees), and power level, all while accounting for wind conditions and terrain features such as sand and water traps. Hitting with more than 90% power increases the chance of inaccuracy, forcing players to carefully balance strength and precision. Once on the green, gameplay shifts to a dedicated putting mode using the same direction-and-power system. The game includes four unique courses—Pitch & Putt, Short Course, Regulation, and the aptly named Monster—each with progressively greater challenge and length. A built-in driving range allows players to hone their skills before tackling a full 18-hole round or competing in the championship mode. While graphically simple, Fore! was praised for its realism and depth. Stanley Greenlaw of Computer Gaming World noted that selecting the right club and swing strength was the central skill, and that shots typically land near the aimed spot, giving the game a fair but demanding challenge. A thoughtful entry in the early sports sim genre, Fore! offered a grounded, mechanics-driven experience well ahead of the flashier arcade-style golf games that would follow.
What would the original developers think of today’s full-size golf simulators and realistic imagery from the world’s top golf courses? This was a cute and simple game, but it’s also a space where there are so many very well-developed apps that we don’t think a revival of this product would be able to make a real market impact.   We’re going to archive it.
