Fax (1983) is a fast-paced trivia game developed by Exidy and released for arcades, Apple II, and Commodore 64. Published by Epyx for home platforms, it features over 4,800 multiple-choice questions across four core categories: general knowledge, sports, history, and entertainment.
Players can choose from three difficulty levels—Novice, Expert, and Genius—and can play solo or head-to-head in two-player mode. During each question, two timers are displayed: a visual bar at the top representing the round’s total time, and a numeric countdown at the bottom showing how many points are awarded for a correct answer. Quick thinking is rewarded, as the point value drops rapidly with time.
Adding a playful touch, the game optionally displays a cartoon after each question: a graduation cap for correct answers, or a dunce cap for wrong ones. These lighthearted animations enhance the quiz show atmosphere and keep the tone fun regardless of outcome.
While Fax isn’t flashy by modern standards, it delivered a sizable question database and responsive gameplay that made it an engaging option for trivia fans of the early 1980s.
