Escape from Vulcan’s Isle (1981) is a fantasy adventure with light RPG elements, originally published by Epyx under the title Forgotten Island for the Atari 8-bit computers. Stranded on a mysterious volcanic island after a shipwreck, players take on the role of a renowned navigator seeking to escape a perilous and enchanted land filled with mythical dangers.
The game is played from a top-down perspective, with exploration unfolding across labyrinthine caves, volcanic ravines, and dense jungle. As the player explores, they discover the journal of a long-lost sailor named Alcemnon, revealing clues about magical items scattered across the island—such as a cloak of invisibility, a magic flute, and ancient scrolls containing spells.
Monsters roam the island relentlessly, including limb-tearing Satyrs, flesh-eating Harrises, and airborne Winged Demons. Combat occurs when enemies make contact, prompting a turn-based battle where success depends on equipment, character stats, and a randomized dice mechanic. Players must balance exploration with survival, as time is limited and resources—available only from a solitary village—are scarce.
Although simplistic in presentation, Escape from Vulcan’s Isle offers a rich and atmospheric experience. Its mixture of exploration, real-time movement, item-based puzzles, and randomized combat made it a unique hybrid for its time. The game’s mood, mystery, and strategic decision-making have earned it a cult appreciation among early home computer adventurers.
The original ad for this game sums it up really nicely (click on it for a better view). It’s got a great premise and great gameplay and would make a really great mobile app or fun web app. Or combine similar titles into a complete offering. There’s a fun little playthrough at
this link. Obviously the graphics were from 1981, so they’re quite dated, but if you’ve got a little artistic talent, you could turn this into a fun offering.
