Bulldog

1987
In Bulldog (1987), players pilot a small fighter ship through vertically scrolling levels, battling the alien POLON forces en route to massive motherships. Each stage presents increasingly aggressive defenses, including seven types of enemy turrets—such as homing missile launchers, shielded cannons, and rapid-fire blasters—alongside destructible wall barriers that require careful maneuvering and constant firepower. Gameplay centers on surviving long enough to reach and dismantle each level’s boss: a heavily armed mothership. Success requires destroying all its gun emplacements before progressing to the next wave. Along the way, players can collect power-ups to boost speed, add auto-fire, drop screen-clearing bombs, and gain temporary invincibility. Special pickups also alter movement or reduce your ship to its basic form. Originally released for the Commodore 64, Bulldog offered joystick control and a distinctive upgrade system where bonuses could be lost upon death, emphasizing both precision and survival. Though lesser-known than other shooters of the era, it features an engaging upgrade mechanic and challenging enemy variety across its arcade-style action.
