Breakdance

1984
Capitalizing on the early-80s breakdancing craze, Breakdance (1984) by Beck-Tech and Epyx challenges players to prove their moves across three distinct mini-games, either individually or in a full “Grand Loop” performance. Featuring one or two player alternating turns, the game blends rhythm, memory, and pattern recognition. In Hot Feet Dance Contest, players engage in a Simon-style memory game, replicating increasingly complex sequences of breakdancing moves shown by a computer dancer. Battle the Rocket Crew places players near a riverside where they must mimic dance moves to eliminate descending b-boys before getting shoved into the water. Perfection’s Dance Puzzle requires players to reorder a jumbled sequence of four observed moves to earn ghettoblasters. The Choreograph mode allows players to select from 14 unique dance moves to entertain a crowd freestyle-style. Completing the Grand Loop earns a coveted spot in the Breakdance Hall of Fame. Praised at the time for capturing the style and culture of the breakdance movement, the game delivers a lighthearted rhythm experience that reflects its era’s vibrant street energy.
When breakdancing hit the scene in the early 1980’s, I don’t think anybody would have ever predicted that it would eventually become an Olympic event, but sure enough in 2024 it happened.  What does this mean for the future of breakdancing video games?  Who knows, but we’ve got the neon, the parachute pants, and the gaming history to perhaps revive a title like this.  If nothing else, watching this quick playthrough of some of the levels will bring a smile to your face.
