Released in 1979, Dunjonquest: The Datestones of Ryn is a prequel to Temple of Apshai and the second title in the Dunjonquest series. Players step into the boots of a younger Brian Hammerhand, tasked with recovering the stolen Datestones of Ryn from a monster-filled cave — all under a strict 20-minute time limit. Streamlined and faster-paced than its predecessor, Datestones introduced the MicroQuest format: compact, action-forward RPGs with accessible pricing and faster gameplay. The dungeon features a single level, randomized combat, and strict inventory limits that require repeated runs to the entrance, raising both tension and replayability. While written in BASIC and maintaining the top-down, room-by-room exploration of Apshai, this entry leaned toward real-time decision-making and strategic risk. With heads to collect, treasures to weigh, and time running out, Datestones of Ryn carved a niche as one of the earliest experiments in the action-RPG hybrid model that would later define an entire genre.
Along with everything in the Dunjonquest series, we’d like to revive this real-time action-RPG. For a complete playthrough of the Atari 8-bit version, check out this
