Techno Cop

1988
Techno Cop (1988) blends arcade racing with gritty side-scrolling action in a dystopian near-future where one cop takes the law into his own hands. Each mission begins with a high-speed drive through the crime-infested streets in a sleek red sports car, dodging traffic and destroying enemy vehicles with onboard weaponry. Upon arrival at your destination, gameplay shifts to a platform-style shooter. Armed with a pistol (and later a more devastating arsenal), you infiltrate rundown buildings crawling with thugs, leap over hazards, and ascend via elevators to reach and apprehend—or eliminate—a target criminal before time runs out. Known for its dark cyberpunk aesthetic and over-the-top violence, Techno Cop generated controversy upon its release, particularly on the Sega Genesis where exploding enemies and graphic content prompted one of the system’s earliest content warnings. While the driving segments were sometimes criticized for repetition, the shooting stages offered fast-paced, visceral action that kept players engaged. With its edgy tone and genre-mashing design, Techno Cop stood out as a bold experiment in hybrid gameplay during the late ’80s arcade era.
