Sword of Fargoal

1982
Sword of Fargoal (1982) is a procedurally generated dungeon-crawling adventure that blends roguelike unpredictability with graphical flair, standing out in a time when most games relied on ASCII symbols. Developed by Jeff McCord and published by Epyx for the VIC-20 and later the Commodore 64, it delivered an immersive experience of exploration, risk, and reward. In the game, players assume the role of a warrior tasked with retrieving the legendary Sword of Fargoal, hidden deep within a monster-infested dungeon by the dark wizard Ulma. The sword alone can banish Ulma’s evil, but finding it is only half the challenge — once acquired, the dungeon begins to collapse, and players must escape within a strict time limit or lose the sword forever. The dungeon is shrouded in darkness, revealing itself only as the player explores. With each descent, difficulty increases, introducing deadlier enemies and tighter strategic constraints. Combat is automated once initiated, but timing, positioning, and preparedness are crucial, especially when ambushed. Players collect gold, magical items, and experience points that improve their abilities. Some treasures increase carrying capacity or reveal hidden areas, while others must be defended from greedy foes who can steal them and flee. Notable for its atmospheric tension, dynamic lighting, and replayability, Sword of Fargoal remains a cult classic. Its legacy continues through modern remakes and ports, but the original still offers a compelling blend of strategy, discovery, and urgency that made it one of Epyx’s most beloved titles.
There’s a bit of ambiguity around the IP for this title, and we need to conduct a little more research.  Stay tuned, or send us an inquiry and we’ll update you.
