Street Sports Soccer

1988
Street Sports Soccer from 1988 puts a scrappy twist on the world’s most popular game. Set in colorful urban playgrounds, players form teams from a cast of quirky neighborhood kids, each with unique names and backstories, and compete on makeshift city pitches like alleys and parks. Unlike more realistic soccer simulations, this entry leans into personality and simplicity—rules are relaxed, and flair takes precedence over tactics. The game supports one or two players and includes a modest selection of playing fields. While the graphics are bright and engaging and the interface easy to grasp, the gameplay drew mixed reactions. Critics noted its limited depth and repetitive feel after only a few matches, especially when compared to earlier Street Sports titles like Street Sports Basketball. Still, some praised its lighthearted vibe and pick-up-and-play appeal, especially in multiplayer mode. According to the manual, players can pick from predefined teams or build custom lineups, and can play full games, short scrimmages, or tournament-style competitions. Matches are timed, and action is side-view with simple controls for passing, shooting, and tackling. A command card was also provided for quick reference during play. Though Street Sports Soccer never reached the acclaim of Epyx’s earlier entries, it remains a quirky, casual take on soccer that captures the feel of a neighborhood kickabout more than a stadium showdown.
We know this can’t compete with any of the FIFA titles of today, but for a quirky and scrappy experience, these games might be a nice break from the hyper-realism of modern sports titles.  This title, along with all of the Street Sports titles are fully licensable.  Check out the complimentary Football, Basketball, and Baseball products in the Street Sports collection.
