Dunjonquest: Morloc’s Tower

1979
Dunjonquest: Morloc’s Tower (1979) continues the saga of Brian Hammerhand, now tasked with defeating the mad wizard Morloc in a six-story magical stronghold. Building on the dungeon-crawling foundation of The Temple of Apshai and Datestones of Ryn, this installment introduces real-time combat urgency and a dramatic boss showdown — a first for the series. The tower’s 30 rooms are spread across six levels, with floor layouts structured around odd/even-numbered rooms. Players must not only fight monsters and collect loot, but also solve simple puzzles by using specific treasures in key situations. With a 45-minute time limit and branching exploration paths, Morloc’s Tower blends RPG mechanics with adventure game elements for a faster, more varied experience. Critics praised its tension and pacing, noting how real-time decision-making gave it a unique edge among early text-parser RPGs. For fans of the series, it’s both a natural evolution and a memorable boss battle debut.
One of the earliest games with a Boss Battle, Morloc’s Tower is another title within the Dunjonquest series that we’d like to revive.
