In Lunar Outpost (1984), players assume the role of commander of a Lunar Assault Vehicle tasked with defending Earth’s moon base from waves of hostile Zytron invaders. Gameplay alternates between two modes: a top-down lunar map where players navigate between buildings and intercept incoming attacks, and a 3D combat zone where the player must target and destroy enemy ships.
The lunar base includes vital structures like power stations, repair centers, munitions depots, and command centers. Each structure is essential to the player’s survival, and their destruction weakens the defense effort. The player must manage energy levels, route efficiently along power strips, and strategically choose when to engage in battle or break away to defend other areas under attack.
Enemy waves arrive in escalating intensity across a 28-day lunar cycle. Players score points for each Zytron ship destroyed and for every day their base survives. The game ends when all structures are lost or the full cycle is completed. With three difficulty levels and real-time strategy layered atop arcade-style combat, Lunar Outpost was an ambitious fusion of tactics and action for the Commodore 64 era.
This was a cute game, and there’s a
playthrough (on original C64 hardware) on Youtube where the author is quite fond of the game. We’re not quite sure there’s enough here for a revival though, so we’re going to retire it. If you disagree, feel free to reach out and we can discuss further.
