Dunjonquest: Hellfire Warrior

1980
Released in 1980, Dunjonquest: Hellfire Warrior is the direct sequel to Temple of Apshai, continuing Brian Hammerhand’s journey into the deeper ruins beneath the original dungeon. Haunted by visions of Death and a captive warrior queen named Brynhild, Brian descends through four deadly levels: The Lower Reaches of Apshai, The Labyrinth, The Vault of the Dead, and The Plains of Hell. Designed for experienced players, Hellfire Warrior adds complexity with new shops, potions (some addictive), enchantments, and powerful equipment. Characters from previous Dunjonquest games can be imported, and only seasoned heroes with high experience are encouraged to enter. The game retains its top-down, turn-based format but adds optional objectives, including the rescue of Brynhild — treated as a burdensome treasure with no formal ending trigger. Praised for expanding both mechanics and mythology, Hellfire Warrior set the stage for even greater depth in the Dunjonquest series, including later expansion packs and sequels.
Like the other titles in the Dunjonquest series, Hellfire Warrior has an incredibly rich and detailed backstory and details explained in its 64-page manual.  It’s the direct sequel to Temple of Apshai, taking us to levels 5 through 8, each with 60 rooms.  Like the other titles in the Dunjonquest series, we’re very interested in a comprehensive revival that includes the complete canon.
