Final Assault

1988
Final Assault (1988) is a mountaineering simulation in which players attempt to scale an alpine peak by selecting one of several increasingly difficult trails. Before setting out, players pack a virtual rucksack with essential gear such as ropes, food, crampons, and tents, balancing utility against a strict weight limit. Once on the mountain, gameplay blends arcade-style action with resource management. Players must navigate crevasses, ice cliffs, and changing terrain while managing fatigue, thirst, and exposure to the cold. Originally released as Bivouac in France and Chamonix Challenge in Europe, the game was localized by Epyx for North American audiences. A “Save Game Disk” feature allows progress to be recorded mid-ascent. While reviews were mixed — with some criticizing its pacing — others praised its strategic depth and unusually serious approach to outdoor adventure.
