California Games II

1990
The 1990 sequel to Epyx’s best-selling California Games trades in the halfpipe and BMX tracks for a new set of extreme challenges. This time, players face off in five all-new events: snowboarding down Black Diamond slopes, hang-gliding through thermal currents while dropping water balloons, skimming waves on a jet ski, catching surf on a bodyboard, and skateboarding through a drained aqueduct. Each event has its own mechanics and personality. The snowboarding course unfolds in three distinct segments—from alpine cliffs to a freestyle snowbowl to a grassy obstacle run—while the skateboarding event punishes missed timing with a headlong faceplant into concrete. Hang-gliding demands finesse to stay aloft and hit targets, while the jetski course, though accessible, feels more like a timed ride than a race. Bodyboarding, reminiscent of the original game’s surfing, challenges players to ride the full wave without wiping out. Though reduced in number from the original, these events still offer variety and spectacle, presented with upgraded graphics and darker comedic touches. Multiplayer remains intact via hot seat mode, but this time there are no sponsors or teams—just you, your skills, and the leaderboard. For fans of offbeat sports titles, California Games II adds depth and experimentation, even if it never quite captures the original’s iconic balance.
We currently have a licensee building the next version of California Games, which includes licenses for California Games and California Games II.  Stay tuned for an announcement later this year!
