The Games: Winter Edition

1988
The Games: Winter Edition (1988) was a follow-up to the Summer Edition and Epyx’s final entry in the Epyx Games series.  The Games: Winter Edition, is a multi-event sports simulation offering eight disciplines: Downhill Skiing, Slalom, Ski Jumping, Cross Country Skiing, Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Luge, and the Rings. Up to eight players can compete in a full competition, a selection of events, or practice modes. Many events offer simultaneous play, like Cross Country or Speed Skating, while others alternate between turns. A licensed product of the U.S. Olympic Committee, it follows in the tradition of Summer Games and Winter Games, but with fully reworked graphics, animations, and user interaction. Several events offer standout features: in Figure Skating, players select music and choreograph up to 14 moves, which are then scored based on timing and execution. In Downhill Skiing, players can position multiple camera angles for dramatic third-person replays. Each event rewards precision and rhythm more than joystick mashing, reflecting Epyx’s move toward more immersive, simulation-driven gameplay. The Luge demands steering finesse at high speed, while the Rings test balance and form. Each medal contributes to an overall score, with awards ceremonies and national anthems bringing a touch of pageantry to the competition. The game received praise for its strong audiovisual presentation and animation detail, with reviews noting it as a technical high point for the series. Though it lacked the novelty of Summer Games or California Games, Winter Edition served as a polished send-off to Epyx’s long-running sports franchise.
Along with the other Olympic titles, we’d very much like to revive this title with an appropriate licensing partner.  It was an officially licensed product of the U.S. Olympic Committee, which we are happy to pursue again for an updated release.
