Crush, Crumble and Chomp! (1981) is a tongue-in-cheek strategy-action game that lets players live out their movie monster fantasies. Inspired by 1950s creature features, the game casts you as a giant kaiju—stomping, slithering, flying, or swimming your way through one of four iconic cities: New York, San Francisco, Washington D.C., or Tokyo. Each city is rendered on a scrolling, grid-based 2D map using character graphics, with gameplay unfolding in a turn-based system that emphasizes tactics as much as destruction. Players can choose from prebuilt monstrosities like a Godzilla-like dinosaur, a sea serpent, a giant spider, or even a radioactive blob. Alternatively, you can design your own beast using “crunch credits” to buy abilities like fire breath, invisibility, burrowing, or flight. Movement and attacks are influenced by stats like energy, hunger, and even head tilt—for aiming laser beams or breath weapons. As you rampage through each metropolis, the military responds with tanks, helicopters, mines, and traps. Your goal is simple: do as much damage as possible before being taken down. Points are awarded based on destruction, evasion, and overall mayhem, whether you survive or not. Between clever customization options and city-specific challenges, no two playthroughs feel quite the same. Praised at the time for its originality and dark humor, Crush, Crumble and Chomp! remains one of the most beloved of Epyx’s early titles. Jerry Pournelle of BYTE called it his “all-time favorite,” and for anyone who’s ever rooted for the monster instead of the city, it’s easy to see why.
